Fishing Line Trail at Gene Stratton-Porter Historic Site

Today we returned to one of our favorite places – the Fishing Line Trail at Gene Stratton-Porter Historic Site. It was a beautiful day and perfect for a hike in the woods. We parked at the Gene Stratton-Porter historic site and walked down the asphalt path toward E 850 N. Then we crossed the road and continued on the path until we came to the Fishing Line Trail. Normally we start our hike by turning to the right and today was no different. We walked to where the trail intersects E 850 N and instead of turning around as we normally do, we crossed the road. We wanted to see where the trail led.

What we found is the trail is out in the open and much less wooded than the rest of the trail. It winds around behind the Sower House Shoppe and Tea Room and ends at County Road 315 E. At this point all we could see was a field, but no trail, so we turned around and retraced our steps.

We continued walking along the trail, past where we started. This section of the trail is also quite wooded, but you can hear and see some farms off to the left. We kept walking until the trail crossed N 450 E. Since we didn’t know how far the trail continued, we decided to turn around.

Once we returned to the start of the trail we decided to walk back to the Gene Stratton-Porter Historic Site. It’s such a peaceful and beautiful spot that we always enjoy walking around.

Our total hike was just over 4 miles with most of it on the Fishing Line Trail. We’ve explored the trails at Gene Stratton-Porter Historic Site many times so we only walked down to the the lake and the house today. We love visiting both the historic site and the trail. It’s a beautiful, peaceful, and mostly shady hike with many different areas to explore.
